The "Ins." Tab

The Ins. tab (Insert) is divided into three areas: AutoWords, Special Characters and Clips. The size of the AutoWords and Special Characters areas can be changed by dragging the divider bar between them.

AutoWords

The AutoWords list starts out empty, and you can add new AutoWords by placing the cursor over a word in the main Text Area and using the Tools > Make AutoWord menu item or Ctrl + M. AutoWords can be inserted at the current cursor position by double clicking on them.

If the Enabled box at the top is checked, RoughDraft will automatically insert a word if you begin to type it. The remainder of the word (the bit you haven't typed yet) will be highlighted so that the next thing you type will replace it. This means you can type as you normally do. However, if you see RoughDraft completing the word you want, simply press the <Tab> key and the word will be completed and the cursor placed at the end. Try making some AutoWords and experimenting - it's easier to use than to explain! AutoWords can be used for character names, place names, screenplay directions, or any other text that needs to be used frequently. The contents of the AutoWords list will be remembered next time you start the program.

Using the right mouse button over the AutoWords list allows you to insert the current AutoWord, delete it, or to clear out the whole AutoWords list.

Special Characters

In the centre of the Ins. tab is a list of special characters that are not easy to insert into the text using normal keyboard operation, including symbols and letters from languages other than English. A double click of any character listed here will insert it into the file at the current cursor position. You can also use the Ctrl+Alt+I keyboard shortcut to insert the currently selected special character - useful if you need to insert lots of them.

Clips

At the bottom of the Ins. tab are four Clips, one on each tab. These are very similar to the standard clipboard available through the Edit menu. You can use the Ctrl+F9 to Ctrl+F12 keys to copy the currently selected text (or word, if nothing is selected) to the appropriate Clip. The Clip can then be inserted at the current cursor position by using the F9 to F12 keys. Text in Clips can also be edited manually.

Clips are automatically saved whenever you exit RoughDraft and will be available for use next time you start. They don't affect the normal Windows clipboard in any way.
